Definitions

Vector Image
A vector image is an image file based on mathematical formulas that include things like x and y coordinates for points in the image. This allows the image to be resized to any size without any loss of quality. Vector image formats include AI, EPS, and SVG. Common programs for editing vector images are Adobe Illustrator, CorelDraw, and Inkscape. Vector images can be opened in other image editing programs like Photoshop, but may not work as well as in a dedicated vector illustration program.
Raster (or Bitmap) Image
A raster (aka bitmap) image is an image based on a series of colored pixels. Resizing raster images can result in a loss of quality, especially if they are enlarged. Common raster image formats include GIF, JPG, and PNG. Raster images are better for use in programs like Photoshop, Microsoft Word, and Pages.
