How to Unzip Files

Table of Contents

Basic Tips

You must extract files from a zip file before using them.

You do not need to purchase software to unzip files. Most operating systems will do this without any additional software. Note that you may need to find an app to unzip files on mobile devices like tablets and phones.

Unzipping Files in Windows

  1. Right click on the zip file.
  2. Click on "Extract all" (the wording may vary depending on the version of Windows). This will open a new window with options for extracting the files.
  3. Choose a destination (folder) where you want to extract the files. The default destination is the folder where you saved the zip file. Skip to the next step unless you prefer to extract to a different folder. To choose a different folder, click the Browse button, select a folder, and click OK.
  4. Click the Extract button (the button may be labeled Next for earlier versions of Windows). View the extracted files in the destination folder after the extraction completes.

Unzipping Files on a Mac

  1. Right click on the zip file.
  2. Select "Open with."
  3. Click on "Archive Utility." The Archive Utility will then unzip your file to the same folder as your zip file.
